I just bought a paper shredder and found out that not everyone needs an NSA approved shredder. There are basically 6 security levels when it comes to shredders -level 1 is the lowest and level 6 is NSA/CSS approved which meets NSA/CSS Specification 02-01. This spec is required by the government when they are shredding top secret documentation - the shred size is 1mm x 5mm or less. This is extremely small and may or may not be needed for all users. A Cross-Cut machine will suffice for most personal and business users. See the links below for more information.

NSA stands for National Security Agency and they make standards for government agencies to comply with - in this case a government agency needs an NSA approved paper shredder to shred top secret documents. I work for an government agency in DC and we buy NSA approved paper shredders from Monomachines.com. This is where I learned about the NSA approved shredders.

That’s interesting that you keep coming across NSA/CSS. That title should only be applied to “authorized” high security paper shredders. Unless you need a high security shredder for top secret documents, don’t worry about it.

NSA/CSS stands for National Security Agency/Central Security Service.
